Another Bjørn in Action

Bjørn Stærk delivers a magnificent Fisking to an e-mail campaign started by a bunch of Norwegian academics, offering the people of the U.S.A. help "to get rid of George W. Bush". Read the whole thing, it's a blast! And keep a copy so you can send it back if you ever receive the original mail...

Scepsis about Sceptical Environmentalist

A committee of Danish scientists has voiced doubts about the scientific honesty of Bjorn Lomborg, best know for his book 'The Sceptical Environmentalist' in which he contradicts the doom and gloom message propagated by many environmental action groups.
I don't know if this is just another ad-hominem attack against this well-know environmental dissident, or if there is any meat to the accusations this time. I couldn't find any specific allegations in the articles I read so far:
Note that the title of the last article is misleading: later in the article we find this quote "But because Dr. Lomborg was not found grossly negligent, he could not be found formally to have been scientifically dishonest, the report said."

Gravity at the Speed of Light

Something I've been wondering about since high-school physics lessons: does gravity have a speed, and if so, what is it? This New Scientist article reports on experimental evidence that it does have a speed, namely the same as light.
Score another one for science...

Belgian Army: The Saga Continues

Just heard on the radio this morning: according to the latest studies, about half the personel in the Belgian army (military and civilian) are having second jobs to make ends meet... As the saying in Dutch goes: 'Ga daarmee naar de oorlog!' ('Imagine going off to war with that lot!')

Oh, they even noticed in Israel...

Seems like even the Israeli's picked up the news on Belgium's reluctance to go to war over Iraq while I was away: read all about it in this
Jerusalem Post article.
Well, I guess they really don't care one way or another, and who can blame them?
UPDATE: Oh, yeah, username/password for the article is cypherpunk/cypherpunk (it worked when I tried). Nifty how almost any web-content you have to go through 'free registration' for will open up with this username/password combination.... spread the word!

More Belgian army stuff...

Talks are ongoing between the interior minister and the defense minister on using the Belgian army in police roles... just great! Instead of hiring more police officers, no, they're going to use (cheaper) soldiers for certain tasks, if the ministers get their way. Most notable tasks to be filled by the army would include guard duty and helicopter assistance during car chases.
Hmmm, first they abolish free speech (anti-racism law and anti-tobbaco-advertising law), now they're using the army as police force. This country is turning more and more into a banana-republic, if you ask me.

Back!

Vacation is finally over, back to the grind for me. Lucky for you, the few remaining readers I still have, this means posting will now resume, live from Brussels!
